The Distillery

The Glendronach Distillery has been around since 1826 and are renown for their sherry casks. Once of the few distilleries that focus on fully maturing their whisky in sherry casks, which are generally more expensive than bourbon and other cask types, which contributes to their “sherry bomb” style of whiskies.

Nestled in the valley of Forgue in the Scottish Highlands, they have been making whisky for almost 200 years, however it was their recent revival by the legendary Billy Walker, who took the helm at Glendronach in 2008 and from then until 2016 he brought Glendronach back into the spotlight as one of Scotlands top whiskies.

Walker passed the torch onto Rachel Barrie, a master blender who will no doubt continue the great work of her predecessor.

This whisky was bottled in 2019.

Nose 4.5/5

Delicious dark fruits burst out immediately, crisp sugar and caramel follow with light florals, creamy vanilla and malt and a hint of oak. Orange marmalade, walnuts and maraschino cherries round it out.

Palate 4.5/5

Creamy, velvety mouthfeel. Chilli dark chocolate, fruity notes remain with caramels, walnut, honey, apricot, spicy oak and ripe fig. Slight hint of licorice and cherry.

Finish 4.5/5

Long finish with a strong dark chocolate and plum body throughout. Hints of coffee, walnut, caramel, vanilla and oak poke their heads out at various times as the dark chocolate fades away. A flourish of mint and oranges sneak in on the tail end.

The Verdict

Fantastic whisky. Perfectly balanced with a beautiful and complex nose, delicious and powerful palate that stands up and grabs your attention, rounded off by a long and satisfying whisky. Pairs incredibly well with some dark chocolate, my favourite is the Lindt roasted hazelnut dark chocolate, which makes for an absolutely sublime pairing.

This whisky is where Glendronach starts really showing its wares. The most accessible true sherry bomb currently, if you are a fan of sherried whiskies, this one simply needs to be on your shelf.
