The Distillery
The Glendronach Distillery has been around since 1826 and are renown for their sherry casks. Once of the few distilleries that focus on fully maturing their whisky in sherry casks, which are generally more expensive than bourbon and other cask types, which contributes to their “sherry bomb” style of whiskies.
Nestled in the valley of Forgue in the Scottish Highlands, they have been making whisky for almost 200 years, however it was their recent revival by the legendary Billy Walker, who took the helm at Glendronach in 2008 and from then until 2016 he brought Glendronach back into the spotlight as one of Scotlands top whiskies.
Walker passed the torch onto Rachel Barrie, a master blender who will no doubt continue the great work of her predecessor.
This whisky was bottled in 2020.

Nose 4/5
Caramelised pear, apple, clove, vanilla, cinnamon, strawberry and plum lead with caramel, baked biscuit base and gingersnaps following after some time to breathe.
Palate 4/5
Medium body, sticky fig, pears, creamy vanilla and malt with some dark fruit hiding around the edges.
Finish 4/5
Long and satisfying finish of burnt caramel, cinnamon, vanilla, soft dusty wood, citrus tang and hazelnuts come in late.
The Verdict
One of my go-to daily drinkers. Superb whisky for the pricepoint and one of the more accessible “sherry bombs”. The Glendronach 15 is where Glendronach really starts playing with the big boys though with some incredible rich flavours, however the 12 has a place on every shelf. A well balanced and delicious drop with an enjoyable nose, palate and finish, readily available under $100 which makes it the perfect daily drinker.
The Price
Retailing at $95 AUD, you can usually grab it on special for $90 or less, but even at $95 i wouldn’t blink.
